Pakistani ISI caught in limbo

Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury

For weeks, this newspaper has been exposing the clandestine connections between pro-jihadist Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Pakistani spy agency, Inter Service Intelligence (ISI). Now, a prominent Indian television channel, Wionews has broadcast a sensational report on the conversation between BNP’s Standing Committee member Dr. Khandekar Mosharrof Hussain and Mehmood, a handler of ISI in Dubai, UAE. In the 7-minute conversation, Dr. Mosharrof is heard to have been requesting ISI for managing China in favour of BNP. Mosharrof said, “ “Yes… I want to be… and I am still what you think! But practical connection… communication is impossible for me to come out! I know that it would be fruitful… but what I want to mean that… I will meet your man here… you can get the message. But now what I like to request you that, from your side…if you can cooperate with China. Then in Bangladesh it will be useful before the election.”

In response, ISI handler Mehmood said, “Yes, absolutely! That is already on the table. And it is being done. That’s why, we wanted to do….as a representative whenever it is possible to visit the places it would have been better. Because, in person…you would have talked to them also. But now as you are saying that…it is not possible for you…”

It should be mentioned here that, Bangladesh Nationalist Party has been making frantic bids in getting support from China and the US. Similarly, Jamaat-e-Islami too has been spending millions of dollars with the goal of getting support from the US administration. This evil nexus of pro-jihadist forces also are engaged in spreading rumors against the ruling party in Bangladesh with the ulterior agenda of tarnishing the image of the party in power globally.

Earlier, under Jamaat-e-Islami’s patronization, a controversial former Chief Justice of Bangladesh, Surendra Kumar Sinha published a book which is filled with lies and fabricated stories, clearly with the agenda of tarnishing the image of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, members of Bangladesh Armed Forces and intelligence agencies as well as the members of the judiciary. As this newspaper had exposed the hidden agenda of Sinha and his secret connections, Sinha’s attempt of character assassination of the Prime Minister and several key officials lost steam.

ISI meets agents and contacts in Saudi Arabia:

In the telephone conversation, ISI handler Mehmood is heard saying, “Okay…okay! I understood your point. And along with this…keep trying… may be one… sometime…if it is possible for you to come over for some reasons…may be on medical reason… or may be on Omrah etcetera. So we can arrange meeting with you there. But meanwhile…we will try to contact you through somebody there at our office. Is it okay?”

In reply, Mosharrof said, “Yes. If you can assign somebody from your office here, I can try and different time I can communicate to you or your side.”

ISI is confident of winning the battle:

For years, Pakistani spy agency has been making frantic bids in toppling-down the secularist government of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. There even had been several foiled coup attempts in Bangladesh where ISI mules were directly involved. But this time, ISI is extremely confident of re-establishing Pakistan’s influence in Bangladesh by restoring BNP-Jamaat in power. In the leaked audio conversation, Mehmood is heard saying, “Thank you very much…and very kind! And kindly remain in touch! Because, it is crucial time for all of us. And we have to cooperate; and move forward for our aim to achieve In Sha Allah!”

Mosharrof is a key agent of ISI in Bangladesh:

According to the telephonic conversation, ISI handler Mehmood had termed Mosharrof as their “only friend.” He said, “That’s why… that’s why… I said… you are our only friend there now. We wanted to discuss all this with you…”

BNP seeks Pakistani ISI’s help:

From the telephonic conversation, it also has become crystal clear that Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is totally dependent of the Pakistani spy agency and wants its “help” in overcoming “crisis.” Mosharrof said, “Yes! What we also think very seriously…that we need to cooperate each other. We are in crisis, we need help!”

In reply, ISI handler Mehmood said “Yes… yes! We understand that. Is is already on the table…and that’s why we said…we thought…why not to…sometime finding the possibility to meet you? But as you suspect it is not possible…it is little difficult. So we will find out how to communicate with you. And at the same time continue our effort, to meet you sometime…somewhere. Okay?”

BNP is seen as a jihadist outfit:

According to globally acclaimed counterterrorism website Jihad Watch, BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are already considered as jihadist outfit. In a report, the website said, “The Pakistani spy agency, Inter Service Intelligence, is manipulating the upcoming general elections in Bangladesh this month to help the jihadist Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat e Islami Bangladesh (JIB) form the next government.”

According to several counterterrorism organizations and individuals, Jamaat e Islami is a terrorist organization with network in a number of Western countries including United States, United Kingdom and Canada….In fact, one of the JI war criminals tried in absentia in Bangladesh, Ashrafuzzaman Khan, fled to the U.S. and helped establish and lead one of these American JI organizations: the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA).

Pakistan is a state sponsor of jihad terror itself, yet is now claiming that it is Bangladesh and India that have the terrorist problem. Abdullah Khan, Managing Director of Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, accused Bangladesh and India of engaging in “state sponsored terrorism,” claiming that the Islamic State is “provoked by the governments of India and Bangladesh which are known for their ‘state-sponsored terrorism’ against the Muslim communities.

We must remember Bangladesh is scheduled to hold the next general election on December 30. This election particularly is seen as a battle between secularist Awami League and radical Islamist Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its political and ideological darling, Jamaat e Islami Bangladesh (JIB). Despite this fact, India unfortunately has been maintaining total silence while Pakistani spy agency Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) has become extremely active in ensuring victory of its long-time ally JIB and BNP. Pakistan wants to see an anti-Indian political force in power in Bangladesh.

Jamaat-e-Islami is a terror outfit:

According to several counterterrorism organizations and individuals, Jamaat e Islami is a terrorist organization with network in a number of Western countries including United States, United Kingdom and Canada. Commenting on Jamaat e Islami (JI), Abha Shankar, Senior Analyst at the Investigation Projection Terrorism Investigative Project on Terrorism and Sam Westrop, Director of Islamist Watch, a project of the Middle East Forum in an article wrote, “In the decades since the 1971 war, JI has committed violent acts all across South Asia and, today, the Bangladeshi branch is closely involved with Islamist terror in both Bangladesh and India. JI leaders have openly expressed support for Taliban terrorists and mourned their deaths. And in 2017, the U.S. government designated Hizbul Mujahideen, a Kashmiri jihadist group and JI Pakistan’s “militant wing,” as a terrorist organization.”

Pakistan’s exposed involvement in jihad:

Pakistani authorities and its espionage agency falsely portray notorious radical Islamic militancy groups such as Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), Ansar Al Islam (AAI), Jamaatul Mujahedin Bangladesh (JMB) and the student front of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh (JIB) as “Muslim groups” with the ulterior motive of misleading the global and in particular Western counterterrorism bodies. Pakistan is not only the top patron of radical Islamic militancy; it also has emerged as the protector and custodian of militancy, terrorism and jihad.

Expectations from President Donald Trump and his administration:

US President Donald Trump and his administration are committed against radical Islamic militancy. In the Trump administration, I know a few people, for example, Mike Pompeo, the Secretary of State and John Bolton, National Security Advisor. Few years back, John Bolton and I have worked in a documentary titled ‘America At Risk’. On the other hand, ever since he was the member of the US Congress, Mike Pompeo has been my great defender. Both are men of rare virtue and courage. So is President Donald Trump.

For the sake of saving Bangladesh from slipping into the grips of radical Islamist BNP-Jamaat nexus, United States needs to immediately scrutinize these parties and list as jihadist entity.
