Miscreants kill Jhenidah Hindu priest

JHENIDAH, July 1 (Agencies): A Hindu priest has been killed in Jhenidah today (Friday) in a chilling similarity to the murder of another priest from the religious minority in the same district last month.
Three bike-riding miscreants killed Shyama Nanda Das Babaji, 65, an attendant of Modhupur Kastasagra Radha Madan Gopal Moth at North Kastasagra village in Jhenidah Sadar upazila early on the day.
Hasan Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of sadar police station, said three miscreants riding a motorcycle intercepted
Shyama Nanda while he was plucking flowers for worship from beside a road near the monastery around 5:30am and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.
Later he was rushed to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 6am.
Shyama Nanda, hailing from Chaulia village in Narail district, had been serving at the monastery for the past several years, said police.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Superintendent of Police Altaf Hossain visited the spot.
The incident took place three weeks after the killing of a Hindu priest, Ananda Kumar Ganguly, 66, by unidentified miscreants in the same fashion in Karatipara area of Jhenidah Sadar upazila on June 7.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Friday said the killers of Jhenidah Hindu monastery attendant Shyama Nanda Das Babaji would be identified and arrested soon as there was an eyewitness to the incident.
He came up with the remarks while talking to reporters at his Dhanmondi residence in the morning.
The home minister also alleged that a vested quarter resorted to the secret killings to create anarchy in the country. [Read More]
