Lifschultz was invited not to serve anyone’s political interest: HC

The High Court (HC) maintained that its main duty is to unfold the fact and for this reason American journalist Lawrence Lifschultz was requested to come Bangladesh, ‘not to serve anyone’s political interest’.

Criticising BNP leader MK Anwar’s recent comment, the HC Wednesday said, “A political leader who is accountable to the people should not pass such a remark, as it has already created a negative impact on the society as well as on the trial.”

The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain came down on BNP leader MK Anwar during hearing that took place yesterday on a writ petition that challenged the legality of the martial law rule under which a military tribunal was formed and Col  Abu Taher was awarded capital punishment.

The HC bench also said the case has historic importance and they want to complete the trial as soon as possible. A Pulitzer Prize winner and former east-Asia correspondent of Far Eastern Economic Review Lawrence Lifschultz placed his statement before the HC bench on Monday and claimed that Gen Ziaur Rahman’s decided to execute Col Abu Taher much before the formation of the military tribunal.
