The killing of a 19-year-old Buddhist youth in Cox’s Bazar has intensified concerns among Bangladesh’s religious minority communities, coming amid allegations of prolonged communal threats, earlier attacks on the victim’s family, and claims of intimidation by local radical elements.
The victim, Rahid Barua, was found dead on the morning of January 19, hanging from a tree near his home in BGB Camp Paschim Para, an area under Cox’s Bazar Sadar. Family members and local residents allege that Rahid was abducted from in front of his house late the previous night and murdered after being subjected to physical torture.
Police have recovered the body and launched an investigation, while minority rights groups and community leaders have called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those allegedly involved.
According to Rahid’s father, Kalu Barua, the incident occurred shortly after midnight on Sunday, January 18. Rahid was standing in front of their house when several individuals arrived in two auto-rickshaws and took him away. After that, his mobile phone was found switched off, raising immediate concern among family members.
The following morning, local residents discovered Rahid’s body hanging from a tamarind tree at the house of a nearby relative. Police were informed, and the body was subsequently recovered and sent to the Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
Family members and witnesses claim that Rahid’s body bore multiple injury marks, suggesting that he may have been subjected to violence prior to death. However, police officials have stated that the exact cause of death will be determined after the autopsy report is completed.
Confirming the recovery of the body, Sami Uddin, Officer-in-Charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, said that police acted promptly after receiving the information.
“The body of the youth was recovered hanging from a tree and sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy,” the officer said. “The real cause of death will be known after receiving the autopsy report. The incident is under investigation.”
Police have not yet announced any arrests in connection with the killing.
The murder has drawn particular attention due to allegations of earlier communal attacks against Rahid’s family, which were reportedly under investigation at the time of his death.
Rahid’s mother, Ratna Barua, had filed a case with the same police station on October 26, 2025, following an alleged attack on their home three months earlier. According to the complaint, a group of individuals accused of being radical Islamist elements vandalized the family’s house, looted valuables, and issued threats against Rahid and his relatives.
The case named five accused individuals: Fayez Raju, his cousin Chhoti alias Chhotan, Chhotan’s father Monirul Haque, Raju’s father Choyadul Haque, and an individual identified as Emon.
Family members allege that during the October incident, the attackers caused extensive damage to the house and looted cash, mobile phones, gold ornaments, and other belongings valued at approximately 7.5 lakh taka. They also allege that female members of the household were harassed and that Rahid’s elderly grandmother was physically assaulted. The attackers are further accused of making derogatory remarks targeting the family’s religious identity.
The family claims they were repeatedly threatened with death following the attack.
According to Rahid’s father, the conflict began after Rahid had a dispute with a local individual known as Chhotan, reportedly over a social media post made on Facebook. The disagreement allegedly escalated into threats and violence.
Fearing for his son’s safety, Kalu Barua said he sent Rahid to Chattogram, where the young man worked at a shop in the New Market area. Rahid reportedly remained there for several months.
“He was sent away to save his life,” Kalu Barua told reporters. “But when he came home recently, they killed him in a planned manner.”
The family alleges that Rahid was murdered while the earlier case filed by his mother was still under investigation.
The killing has caused fear and anger among local minority communities, particularly Buddhists and Hindus, who say they are increasingly vulnerable to targeted violence.
A senior leader of the Bangladesh Buddhist Federation, speaking on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, strongly condemned the killing and demanded swift action.
“If the accused in this case are not arrested and tried immediately, the culture of impunity will continue,” the leader said. “This will push minority communities into extreme insecurity.”
The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council also expressed concern.
Bappaditya Basu, co-organizing secretary of the council, alleged that communal violence against minorities is continuing unabated.
He claimed that members of minority communities are facing killings, physical abuse, sexual violence, arson, and land encroachment, and warned that the situation could worsen ahead of the upcoming national elections.
Basu called for effective protection of minorities and accountability for perpetrators.
Rahid Barua’s killing comes amid reports of attacks on minority communities in different parts of Bangladesh, contributing to what community leaders describe as a growing sense of fear and uncertainty.
Local residents in Cox’s Bazar said the incident has left the area tense, with many minority families worried about their safety. Several witnesses told reporters that Rahid was well known in the neighborhood and that his death has deeply shocked the community.
Human rights observers say the case underscores the need for thorough investigations into allegations of communal violence and for ensuring that victims and witnesses are protected from intimidation.
As of the time of reporting, police have stated that they are examining all aspects of the case, including the allegations of abduction, prior threats, and the earlier attack on the victim’s family. Authorities say further details will emerge after forensic reports and witness statements are reviewed.
Rahid Barua’s family, meanwhile, is demanding justice and protection, saying that the killing of their son highlights the dangers faced by religious minorities and the urgent need for accountability.
