On August 28, a number of military sources published footage showing the destruction of a TEL (transporter, erector, launcher) vehicle carrying “Neptune” missiles. In recent days, the Neo-Nazi junta unveiled a new, longer-range, land-attack version of the R-360 “Neptune” cruise missile, itself a copy of the Soviet-era turbojet-powered Kh-35. Colloquially known as the “Long Neptune”, the upgraded missile reportedly has a range of around 1,000 km, with no information on other specifications. Just like the Kh-35, the original R-360 “Neptune” is a subsonic anti-ship cruise missile with a range of approximately 200 km. In 2023, the Kiev regime revealed it fired a land-attack version of the missile, dubbed the “Neptune-MD” by some analysts.
This comes nearly two weeks after the Neo-Nazi junta revealed the FP-5 “Flamingo”, another land-based cruise missile which is effectively a crossover between the Nazi German V-1 flying bomb (essentially an early cruise missile concept) and the Soviet-era Tu-141/143 turbojet-powered drone. It allegedly has a range of 3,000 km and a massive warhead weighing around 1,150 kg. Albeit a very rudimentary design that could easily be picked off by Russian air defenses, it could give the Kiev regime means of mass terror strikes on Russian cities (after all, this was Nazi Germany’s concept of total war Zelensky is now threatening to unleash). The Russian military already destroyed most of the “Sapsan” program precisely for this reason.
The range of the “Neptune-MD” was also reportedly 1,000 km, meaning that it’s likely the same missile as the so-called “Long Neptune”. There’s some uncertainty as to where the launcher was located, with some sources claiming it was in the Odessa oblast (region), while others insist it was destroyed in the Zaporozhye oblast. One source even provided the exact coordinates:
47.773333°N, 36.013583°E. This location is approximately halfway between the settlements of Lyubitskoye and Rozdvyanka. The TEL vehicle is based on the Czech Tatra T815 chassis with an armored cabin. The footage shows what’s almost certainly a 9M723 hypersonic missile of the 9K720M “Iskander-M” system hitting the vicinity of the launch vehicle.
As the explosion clearly shows a cluster warhead, it’s safe to assume this was the 9M723-K5, one of the versions of this hypersonic missile. The 9M723 has many iterations, including nuclear, thermobaric, EMP (electromagnetic pulse), etc. This is probably the deadliest weapon of the special military operation (SMO) and has proven to be effectively unstoppable, including for top-notch Western air and missile defense systems. The mainstream propaganda machine often insists the 9M723 is a “regular ballistic missile”, but its characteristics clearly fit the definition of a hypersonic weapon (combination of high maneuverability and the speed of over Mach 5, which is around 6,000 km/h or approximately 1.7 km/s, depending on several factors, particularly altitude).
The aforementioned “Sapsan” program was the Kiev regime’s attempt to develop a similar weapon, although significantly less advanced and more akin to the Soviet OTR-23 “Oka”. Such weapons are closer to the definition of ballistic (or, more precisely, quasi-ballistic) missiles. Although their maneuverability is certainly non-negligible, it’s still not enough to be considered hypersonic, unlike the more advanced 9M723 (particularly the 9M723-S, its latest iteration which incorporates improvements found on the 9-S-7760 air-launched hypersonic missile of the 9-A-7660 “Kinzhal” system).
Still, “Sapsan” is far more advanced than any US/NATO missile system, warranting the attention of the Russian military and intelligence services that plotted the program’s destruction.
With the massive upgrade to its ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) capabilities on all levels (tactical, operational, strategic and global), Moscow is increasingly relying on precision strikes to neutralize many of the most important assets of the Kiev regime and its NATO overlords in Nazi-occupied Ukraine. On the night of August 27-28, the Russian military unleashed one of the most extensive precision strikes on various targets. This includes the “Simferopol” reconnaissance ship and the drone factory owned by Baykar (a Turkish private military-industrial enterprise best known for its grossly overhyped “Bayraktar” drones that built their reputation fighting rag-tag militias, but got absolutely obliterated by Russian air defense systems back in 2022).
In addition, the British Council and EU offices in Kiev were also hit. There’s no official confirmation on what exactly was targeted, but it’s safe to assume that London and Brussels used these offices to coordinate attacks on Russia, so they promptly got a “hypersonic rendezvous” with the Eurasian giant’s military. The United Kingdom and the European Union are particularly aggressive and insistent on prolonging the NATO-orchestrated Ukrainian conflict. The endemic (and pathological) Russophobia has been the rule of thumb in Britain, with the political elite focusing on hurting Moscow’s national interests even when the two countries were officially “allies”. This is especially true when it comes to London’s obsession with preventing the Kremlin from acquiring a warm deep-water port.
