Washington must crush radical Islamism

One wonders if the Donald J Trump administration will ever really fight radical Islamist terror! Observers say Islamist terror poses an existential threat to the entire civilized world today. The United States is supposed to lead the entire “free” world and devise an appropriate mechanism to annihilate the evil and protect its democratic values. However, the pattern of Washington on this front has been highly disappointing.

In the late 1960s, Washington ignored the movements such as Al Fatah and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine which resorted to violence against the civilians to accomplish their political goals. In the late seventies, the Jimmy Carter presidency in Washington looked the other way when Shiite Islamists took over Iran and took the nation along a radical Islamist path. In Afghanistan, the Carter administration encouraged the Sunni Islamists to drive out the then Soviet Union from the region.

Last year, the then Joe Biden administration in Washington acted in a way that led to the exit of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh and its replacement with a radical Islamist regime headed by Muhammed Yunus. After the fall of the tyrannical Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria last year, the Trump administration endorsed its interim head Ahmad al-Sharaa.

It did not matter to Washington that al-Sharaa  was once affiliated to al-Qaida . Nor did it matter to Washington that it had itself once designated the Al-Nusrah, the group al Sharra led, a foreign terrorist organization. The Trump administration has revoked the terrorism designation of the al-Sharaa-led al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. It has passed temporary waivers on sanctions against the group.

Today Washington seems to have developed cold feet even in defending Israel, one of its most trustworthy allies and the only democracy in the Middle East, against the existential threat the Islamist forces in the region pose to it . Washington is doing little to annihilate the Islamist rulers in Iran and their proxies which pose threat to Israel.  Iran’s proxy Houthis continue their attacks against container shipping through the Red Sea.

The Trump presidency is being very chummy with the Islamists in Pakistan. The main demon behind the recent terror strike that took place in Pahalgam in India’s Jammu & Kashmir is Pakistan’s self-declared Field Marshal Asim Munir.  But Washington is doing little to restrain him. Recently, the Trump presidency has designated The Resistance Force, which has claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terror, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. But instead of fully backing India to combat Islamist terrorism and reprimanding Munir, President Trump recently invited him to a lunch at the White House. His Vice President JD Vance said the Pahalgam incident was “none of our business.” Reports are Washington has even offered Islamabad its fifth-generation fighter aircraft and advanced missiles.

The observers warn the Trump administration against giving an impression of being soft to radical Islamism anywhere. They counsel Washington must rein in the radical Islamists in Iran, Syria, Yemen, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
