Govt encourages use of diversified energy sources: Nasrul Hamid

Dhaka, May 4: State Minister for Power and Energy Nasrul Hamid on Wednesday said the government is encouraging the use of diversified and alternative energy sources to ensure sustainable development.

He also observed that a time-befitting plan can ensure energy security and it needs prompt implementation.

The junior minister was addressing a workshop at Bidyut Bhaban in the city on “Energy Security” organised by Price Waterhouse Coopers (pwc), India, in assistance with Asian Development Bank.

He said Bangladesh is going to be a big market of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as the government has taken the initiative to introduce such gas for household consumers.

“The government has taken initiative to use LPG in 70 per cent households. We’re also working to increase the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and renewable energy,” he told the workshop.

The state minister sought cooperation of the ADB to use coal for multiple purposes.

The function was also addressed, among others, by power secretary Monwar Islam, ADB South Asia energy director Anthony Jude, PDB chairman Shamsul Hasan Mia and additional power secretary Ahmed Kaikawas, according to a news agency.
