Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived Sunday in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, under tight security, for a visit aimed at launching development projects.

On Thursday, five people were killed in a suicide bombing on a hotel housing the Turkish delegation that arrived in advance of the president’s visit. No Turks were injured in the attack.

Erdogan and his delegation were received at the airport by Somali President Sheikh Mohamed and other government officials. Mr. Erdogan praised major developments made in Somalia after being welcomed at the new Turkish built terminal at the Mogadishu airport.

Mohamed thanked Turkey for its investment in his country, despite the insecurity it faces.

Turkey is a major investor in Somalia, including carrying out a series of major construction projects in a city left devastated by over two decades of war, and now undergoing a major building boom.

Erdogan last visited Mogadishu in 2011 while serving as prime minister, the first non-African leader to visit the country in 20 years.
