Rumours spreading to destabilise RMG sector

Rumour, simply widespread ‘rumour’ was the prime reason behind most of the incidents of unrest and violence in the garment sector across the country in recent times.

It was rumoured that a pregnant employee of a garment factory gave birth of a pre-matured child due to severe beating by the senior staff that prompted the factory workers to go on the rampage.

Another blood-chilling rumour that sent a shockwave among the garment workers that body of an employee had been hidden in a water tank after he was beaten by the musclemen of the management. This rumour infuriated the workers that created unrest in the garment sector, source said.

Similarly a rumour caused a severe clash at Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) in the second week of December last year resulting the death of several workers.

Vested quarter had spread rumour to damage the reputation of the country’s biggest foreign investing business-house Young One Group.

Rumour was afloated that some workers had kept confined in a factory of Young One Group after beaten by a factory owner’s hooligans. This sparked chaos in the CEPZ, sources added. [Read More]
