Democracy not safe under present govt

Speakers at a roundtable discussion have alleged that the parliamentary democracy is not safe under the present government as Sheikh Hasina wants to ‘ruin the parliamentary democracy’.

BNP central leader and former minister Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu has called upon all to take part in the street movement led by BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia after the World Cup Cricket Tournament to save the parliamentary democracy. Addressing the roundtable, he said, “Sheikh Mujib had established one-party government by introducing ‘BAKSHAL’ while Sheikh Hasina wants to establish one-party rule again by ruining parliamentary democracy.”

Sushil Forum, a pro-BNP social organsiation, arranged the discussion on ‘Crisis of Parliamentary Democracy in Bangladesh and Possibility’ at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity yesterday (Saturday).

Secretary General of Islami Oikya Jote Maulana Abdul Latif Nejami and BNP central leader Ismail Hossain Bengal addressed the function, among others, with President of the Forum Md Zahid in the chair.

Abdul Latif Nejami said the country was facing a deep crisis of democracy and blamed the ruling Awami League for creating the crisis.

He stressed on building up strong movement to oust the government to save democracy.

Ismail Hossain Bengal alleged that all the parties of the country, including two major parties, do not practice democracy properly. “At first, democracy has to be established among the parties,” he said.
