Union becomes more unified than before: Elected President takes charge of EU today

The Treaty of Lisbon, which comes into force today has laid the foundation for a more democratic, efficient and transparent European Union (EU), allowing it to better tackle the challenges ahead.
The Treaty provides EU with a permanent President of the European Council and a High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy that will enhance continuity and strengthen the Union’s role in the international arena.
