Low-purchasing price, power outage blamed: Food procurement drive hits snag

The food procurement drive of the government is not keeping pace with the target due mainly to low purchasing price of rice and paddy, power outage and bad weather.
The government has fixed the procurement target of rice at 12 lakh tonnes and paddy at 3 lakh tonnes this year. The four and a months’ food procurement drive was launched on April 15.
The government has so far procured 1,09568 tonnes of rice and 13144 tonnes of paddy.
About 69,000 tonnes of rice and 9,000 tonnes of paddy have been collected till now from Rajshahi division which is alone slated to supply 8,02,391 tonnes of rice and 3,715 tonnes of paddy of the total procurement target. [Read more]
