The Election Commission (EC) is planning to propose to the government for providing it ’suo moto’ powers for holding the local-body elections.
“We are to propose to the government to provide us suo moto powers to hold the local body elections at places where tenures will be expired,” Election Commissioner Brig Gen (Retd) Sakhawat Hussain said this while talking to reporters at his office yesterday.
At present, the EC holds the local elections at the request of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and Cooperatives. [Read more]
