Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh assassinated in Tehran

TEHRAN, Iran — Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran Wednesday, according to separate statements released by Hamas and Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.

No one immediately claimed responsibility, but Israel previously said it would kill Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders after the Oct. 7 terror attack in Israel.

In its statement, Hamas mourned the death of Haniyeh, who it said was killed in “a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran.”

Haniyeh attended the swearing in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday.

“Early this morning, the residence of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran was struck, resulting in his and one of his bodyguards’ martyrdom. The cause is under investigation and will be announced soon,” the Revolutionary Guards said.

Iranian state television reported on his death early Wednesday.

Israel did not immediately comment, but it often doesn’t when it comes to assassinations carried out by their Mossad intelligence agency, according to an Associated Press report.

The Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel resulted in 1,200 deaths and 350 people taken hostage. In its subsequent military campaign, Israel has killed more than 39,360 Palestinians and wounded more than 90,900, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, whose count does not differentiate between civilians and combatants.

Information from Reuters and the Associated Press was used in this report. [Read More]
