BOGRA, July 8: Bumper bottle gourd output has brought a revolutionary solvency amid hundred poor and marginal growers in this current season due to favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-imput.
Farmers and others concerned, including agriculturists, were very much optimistic about the overall bottle gourd production seeing well growth of the saplings of the vegetable. The farmers have already started harvesting of the crops from last month across the region.
In a recent visit the correspondent found the farmers of the different villages are using modern technology and using high yielding bottle gourd seeds to reduce dependency on food import to meet the internal demand. The wholesalers from different kitchen markets visit the famous vegetable haats and purchasing the crops with the satisfactory price.
"Bottle gourd plays an important role to ensure vegetable security gaining momentum in all twelve upazilas of Bogra. Each big sized crops are being sold from Tk 30 to 40, middle sized at Tk 25 to 28 and small ones Tk from 18 to 20 in the retail markets." said farmers Rahim Uddin, 56, under Shibganj upazila of Bogra district.
The authority concern said, "It is high time to enhance acreage of bottle gourd farming instead of only depending on Irri-Boro rice in the dried area to ensure food security amid the adverse impact of climate change."
"I have planted the vegetable in on 10 decimal of land in this current season spending Tk 2,400 and I have already sold the crop with Tk 12000." said farmer Abu Taher, 40, under Dupchanchia upazila of Bogra.
"Rest of the vegetable may be sold with Tk 6,300 if the price remains high." he added.
According to Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) source, timely plantation of seeds accompanied by the current climate is being considered as a positive sign for attaining a bumper production of the cash crop.
