SYLHET, July 02: One hundred seventy four schools were shut down due to floods in six upazilas of Sylhet district, while over 3300 hectares of Aus paddy land went inundated during the last few days, official sources informed Sunday.
The rivers Surma and Kushiyara also swelled at many points while internal road links at places were snapped due to the onrush of hilly floods coupled with excess rains. Kushiyara were flowing above redmarks at different points, WDB officials informed.
Sylhet Met office in charge Sayeed Ahmed Chowdhury said Sylhet experienced over 980 mm rainfall in June this year against the last year's 657 mm whereas 818 mm is considered normal for Sylhet. Farmers in the region are in much trouble with the floods after the worst calamity hit the region devastating the Boro crops just months ago.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Md. Shahidul Islam Chowdhury said the floods, caused by the excess rains in the Meghalaya and Assam had overflowed the Indian river Barak, which enters in the name of Surma and Kushiyara caused the situation. A meeting of the district administration on Sunday afternoon was informed 178 schools, including 162 primary schools had been shut due to the floods.
The affected upazilas in Sylhet are Golapganj, Dakshin Surma, Balaganj, Beanibazar, Fenchuganj, Osmaninagar and Gowainghat upazilas while the affected upazilas in Moulvibazar include, Sadar, Rajnagar, Kulaura, Barlekha and Juri.
Deputy Director of the DAE's Sylhet divisional office Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid said 2445 hectares of Aus paddy lands had already been inundated in Sylhet and 825 hectares in Moulvibazar districts. If the water didn't recede in 2 or 3 days, the crops wouldn't be saved, he added.
