US Unemployment Rate Rises Slightly

The U.S. unemployment rate rose slightly to five percent in March.

Friday’s report from the Labor Department also said the economy had a net gain of 215,000 jobs for the month, and noted that wages rose slightly.

Analysts said the unemployment rate rose because news that the economy is improving convinced more jobless Americans to resume their hunt for work. Government experts don’t count people as officially unemployed unless they have searched for jobs in the past four weeks.

Employment rose in retail, construction and health care, while manufacturing and mining saw job losses.

Data show eight million Americans are still unemployed, while another 6.1 million want full time work but can find only part-time jobs. [Read More]
