A court in the city issued on Wednesday warrants for arrest of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia amid the party's decision to make its acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir now its Secretary General, report agencies.
Mirza Fakhrul was made secretary general of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) while Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was made senior joint secretary general of the party on Wednesday, Rizvi came up with the disclosure at a press briefing at the BNP's Nayapaltan central office on the day.
The same day the Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Mohammad Quamrul Hossain Molla issued warrants for arrest for Khaleda Zia and other BNP leaders accepting the charge-sheet against 38 people submitted by Jahidul Islam, sub-inspector of the Jatrabari Police Station in an arson attack case.
The court also asked the officer-in-charge concerned of Jatrabari Police Station to submit a progress report about the order.
BNP leaders Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Salahuddin Ahmed and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah were among the warranted accused.
Of the 38 accused, nine BNP leaders, including MK Anwar, secured bail from the court earlier in the case.
On January 23 last year, at least 31 people suffered burn injuries after miscreants hurled two petrol bombs at a bus in Jatrabari intersection. One of the injured later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
