Bangladesh will import 1.3 million tonnes of crude oil from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at a cost over Tk 43.98 billion.
The cabinet committee on public purchase approved Wednesday this big buy of petroleum fuel alongside seven other projects worth a total of Tk 51 billion.
Eastern Refinery Ltd will import 0.6 million tonnes of crude at a cost of Tk 21.33 billion from Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) while 0.7 million tonnes at Tk 22.65 billion from Saudi Arabian Oil Company (SAUDI ARAMC) for January- December 2016 calendar year.
Meanwhile, the cabinet committee on economic affairs also approved three projects on implementation of 'Padma Bride Railway Connectivity' on government-to-government (G2G) basis with Chinese funds, and appointment of engineering corps of Bangladesh Army through direct procurement method to help facilitate land acquisition, design review and supervision of the bridge, and import of 50 per cent of oil against the total demand for the year 2016 through open-tender process.
The other projects that got the nod from the purchase committee are : consulting services under the project of Safety Net Systems for the Poorest (SNSP) for strengthening the ministry of disaster management and relief programmes administration (SMoDMRPA) at a cost over Tk 260 million, building Itna- Mitamoin- Astragram road of Kishoreganj under different packages at a total cost of over Tk 5.14 bilion , purchase of 4,109 tonnes of corrugated iron sheet at a cost of Tk 600 million and approval to the rate proposed by Engineers India Ltd (EIL) for project management consultant for installation of unit-2 of Eastern Refinery Ltd at a cost of over Tk 1.10 billion.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith presided over both the meetings at the cabinet division at Bangladesh Secretariat.
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury were present, among others.
Additional Secretary of the cabinet division Md Mostafizur Rahman briefed the media after the meetings.
