Police in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta forcibly broke up a rally Thursday held in support of defeated Indonesian presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto. Â
Police fired tear gas and water cannon when the crowd tried to break through a security barricade at a road leading to the Constitutional Court, where the justices had just begun a lengthy reading of their decision on Subianto’s legal challenge of last month’s election. Â
Official results show Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo won 53 percent of all votes cast, taking in well over 8 million more votes than Subianto. The former army general is alleging widespread voter fraud, but observers say the court is unlikely to rule in Subianto’s favor. Â
If the election results are upheld as expected, Widodo will be able to press ahead with transition efforts before taking office on October 20. Â
