‘American Suicide Bomber’ Linked to Al-Qaida in Syria

U.S. officials say an American citizen carried out a suicide bombing in Syria this week on behalf of an al-Qaida-liked militant group.

U.S. news reports quote official sources who confirm the suicide bomber was American, but do not provide the bomber's identity or hometown.

In a series of Tweets on Tuesday, the al-Qaida-linked group known as the al-Nusra Front announced the "martyr operation," which took place in Syria's Idlib province.

The militants identified the American by his Arabic name, Abu Hurayra al-Amriki, and published a photograph of a bearded young Caucasian man smiling and holding a cat. Another photo showed him sitting on the ground wearing what appeared to be a suicide vest. There were also photos of a truck exploding.

A video circulating online appears to show Abu Hurayra al-Amriki loading a truck with explosives, and then switches to a shot of a distant explosion. [Read More]
