Egyptian security officials say a U.S. citizen who was detained in the Sinai peninsula has been found dead in his prison cell, after apparently committing suicide.

The officials said James Henry’s body was found on Sunday, hanging in the jail in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia.

Egyptian authorities had detained him in northern Sinai in August on suspicion of violating a curfew imposed as part of a government crackdown on opposition and militant activity.  Henry told the Egyptians he was a retired U.S. military officer.
