Pakistan Plans to Release Senior Taliban Prisoner

Pakistan says it will soon release former Afghan Taliban deputy leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar in an effort to advance peace efforts in neighboring Afghanistan.

An advisor to the Pakistani prime minister says Baradar could be released within the month.

Baradar was detained by Pakistani officials in 2010. At the time of his arrest he was believed to be independently attempting to engage in peace talks with Afghan authorities.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai had called for Baradar’s release, and that of other Afghan prisoners held in Pakistan, during his trip to Islamabad last month.

During the meeting, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif reaffirmed his government’s support for the Afghan peace and reconciliation process. [Read More]
