Flights to Resume After Kenya Airport Fire

Kenyan authorities say flights will resume later Wednesday at the country’s main airport, after a massive fire forced officials to close the facility.

Presidential spokesperson Manoah Esipisu said domestic and cargo flights would resume in the afternoon. There was no immediate word about when international flights will restart.

The blaze broke out before dawn on Wednesday at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, a major transit hub for East Africa.

Witnesses reported seeing tall orange flames bursting from the airport arrivals wing.  Firefighters, the military and private companies battled the fire for hours before bringing it under control.

There were no reports of serious injuries, and the cause of the fire has not been determined.

The Nairobi airport is among the busiest in East Africa, serving more than five million passengers a year.
