Authorities in the U.S. state of California say a heavily armed gunman killed at least six people Friday in the city of Santa Monica, before he was shot dead by police in the library of a local college.
Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said a second person, described as “a person of interest” was taken into custody. Police did not immediately identify the suspects.   Â
Seabrooks said the rampage apparently began at a house where two people were found dead near Santa Monica Community College. The spree continued as the gunman, dressed in black, made his way toward the campus. Seabrooks said two more people were killed near the college, and two more died on campus before the shooter was killed.
U.S. President Barack Obama was attending a fundraising event in Santa Monica about the time of the shootings. But the U.S. Secret Service, which guards the president, described the shootings as a local police matter and said the violence had not affected the president’s visit. [Read More]
