Extrajudicial killings fall remarkably: NHRC

The number of extrajudicial killings (in crossfire and police custody) in the country has fallen remarkably though it has not come to an end, said National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairperson Dr Mizanur Rahman on Wednesday.
“The Commission is working with the goal to put an end to extrajudicial killings in crossfire as well as in police custody,” he said while speaking at the inaugural session of National Citizens’Â Council 2011 in the city’s LGED auditorium.
In demand for ‘partnership democracy and responsible governance’, Lokomorcha, Governance Coalition and Wave Foundation jointly organised the day-long conference with the participation of several hundred people.
Governance Advocacy Forum Chairperson and PKSP Chairman Dr Quazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad presided over inaugural session of the conference.
Among others, Dhaka University Economics Professor MM Akash, UNDP Adviser on Local Government Dr Tofael Ahmed, Magura District Lokomorcha President M Habibul Hassan, Wave Foundation Executive Director Mohsin Ali, and Anwar Zahid and Mumtaz Begum of Governance Coalition addressed the function.
Dr Rahman said, “Democracy means partnership and responsibility in the governance system. All have to be conscious about respective rights and responsibilities to ensure human rights in the country.” He said the local people had to take the responsibility of monitoring the performance of doctors in hospitals, teachers in schools and colleges and government officials.
