The Indian government refusal to pay transshipment fees for carrying cargo to its northeast using the Bangladesh water ways has come as a big embarrassment to the government.
The authorities had earlier introduced the transshipment fees at a rate of Tk 10,000 for a cargo container and Tk 1000 for per ton cargo under bulk transfer. Finance Minister AMA Muhith and Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni had piloted the initiative in putting the fees but they agreed to take their decision back this week on pressure from Delhi, sources said.
