BNP leader Bakir dies in custody

BM Bakir Hossain, former chief of Sonali Bank Employees Union, died of brain haemorrhage in custody on Thursday, an official source said. Hossain passed away in Apollo Hospital while undergoing treatment, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Golam Haider told The New Nation. He was admitted to Millennium Hospital on December 22 after a brain stroke. Later, he was transferred to Apollo Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
A leader of the BNP-backed workers’ organisation he was arrested on July 9, 2007 and sentenced to 13 years in jail in May, 2008 for illegally accumulating wealth and concealing information from the Anti-Corruption Commission. [Read more]
