Overcoming ‘monga’: Early varieties of paddy create jobs for farm workers in 5 N-dists

Marginal farmers and farm workers of five northern districts are no longer afraid of ‘monga’ (near famine situation) as before in two Bangla months ‘Ashwin’ and ‘Kartik’ (mid-September to mid-November). The employment generating early varieties of paddy, BRRI Dhan-33 and Bina Dhan-7, are being harvested in the peak ‘monga’ period of mid ‘Ashwin’ while ‘Aman’ harvest is still about two months away.
Sources said that after planting ‘Aman’ paddy in mid-September millions of farm workers of ‘monga’-prone five northern districts like Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha usually sit idle as they have no work. [Read more]
