The local government system has received a setback following adoption of upazila parishad bill in the Jatiya Sangsad. The upazila chairman has been made subservient to the local MP as without his clearance the former cannot have any communication with the government. The upazila chairman will have to go to the government through MPs for resolution of local issues. Here the power of the MPs has been made absolute while that of the upazila chairman restricted.
The law has been given retrospective effect from 30 June, 2008. [Read more]
