A food crisis is prevailing in the whole of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) as crops have been damaged by ‘rat flood’ and the residents have little hope of getting rice or other Jhum crops.
Hordes of rats have eaten most crops and Jhum plants in some of areas of CHT and indigenous people are reported migrating from one hill to another.
In last September hundreds of thousands of rats reportedly descended on to the Jhum fields at night and ate all crops.
The hill people said the rat flood happens once every 40 to 50 years as bamboo plants sprout, which increase the breeding animals, which eat those. [Read more]
