The High Court yesterday quashed the trial of jailed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a Tk 3 crore extortion case saying it was “illegal” to prosecute her under emergency power rules since the offence was committed much before the proclamation of emergency.
A High Court Division Bench comprising Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and Justice Shahidul Islam delivered the judgment upon a writ petition filed by the Awami League (AL) Chief, who was arrested on July 16, 2007 from her Dhanmondi residence in connection with the case, during an anti-graft drive.
