Setback to donor-aided pry education: School dropouts rise to 47 pc while number of freshers declines

Primary school dropout rates in Bangladesh rose to 47 per cent from 33 per cent in last four years marking a sharp 14 per cent increase.
The alarming trend of dropout was detected in a study conducted by 10 Non Government Organisations (NGOs), which revealed that the dropout has increased from 33 per cent in 2002 to 47 per cent in 2006. Besides, the net enrolment of six to 10-year-old students declined to 93 per cent in 2005 from 97 per cent in 2002.
