A certain quarter looks determined to divert the people’s attention and fish in troubled waters by demanding trial of the war criminals of 1971. This they are doing at a time when the present government is being acclaimed home and abroad for its firm stand against corruption. It is really amazing that Gono Forum leader Dr Kamal Hussain who is well aware as to why the war criminals could not be tried, is seen raising the same demand. A look at the history reveals that a large number of prisoners who had opposed the Liberation War got released under a general amnesty granted by the then Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on December 16, 1973, the second anniversary of Independence.
