Since the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) election was held on April 25, 2002, at least seven of its commissioners were killed by the terrorists, while at least 15 others are in jail for their involvement in criminal acts, including killings, extortion, corruption and land grabbing.
At least 30 other commissioners are on the run to avert arrest as arrest warrants had been issued on them. Monowar Hossain Dipzal, the commissioner of ward-no 9 and also a film actor, has been awarded 17 years jail in his absentia for possessing illegal firearms. [Read more]
