A devastating fire at the state-owned Ghorasal Urea Fertiliser Factory Ltd (GUFFL) in Narsingdi in the early hours of yesterday, caused an estimated loss of Tk 500 crore.
The factory, having production capacity of 4,500 metric tones of urea fertilizer per day, was closed sine die after the devastating fire. Farmers of as many as 19 districts of the country were dependent on the fertilizer produced at the factory.
It is being feared that hundreds of workers might become jobless and both fertilizer transporters and traders would face huge financial losses due to suspension of production at the factory. [Read more]
