AIIB to fund Nepal’s hydro projects

KATHMANDU, June 23: The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) assured recently Nepal it will finance two projects, each costing about Rs 10 billion (US$100 million) through soft loans, according to the government of Nepal's Finance Minister Gyanendra Bahadur Karki. Karki said Nepal expects investments from AIIB in priority sectors that include: transportation, electricity generation, transmission lines, urban development, drinking water projects, aviation and information technology. According to Nepal, included in the funded projects, the mountainous country also wants AIIB financing for the 87-MW Tamakoshi V hydropower facility to be developed from the tailrace of the 456-MW Upper Tamakoshi hydropower project in Dolakha and a 93-MW Sharada-Babai hydropower project in Salyan and Dang districts.
