Cultivation of early onion variety begins in Bogra

BOGRA, Oct 25: Farmers of the district are now cultivating early variety of onion after harvesting short duration T-Aman paddy.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source said thousands of poor and marginal farmers of 12 upazilas have brought over 300 hectares of land under onion farming in the current season with an expectation of getting a bumper production and good market prices.
Growers will harvest the crop in December, sources said.
Sources said the farmers of the area are showing more interest to grow early onion this year as they got good market prices last year. Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) and other NGOs disburse short-term loan facilities among the farmers to cultivate the crop.
Solaiman Ali, a farmer of Dawakola village under Sadar Upazila, said he brought 0.20 acre of land under the cultivation of early variety of onion this season spending Tk 7000. He said he expects a profit of Tk 20,000 if he achieves a good output.
"Many cultivators of the district have become self-reliant by cultivating different varieties of vegetables including onion", he added.
Protul Chandra, deputy director of DAE, said onion cultivation is increasing in recent times as the farmers find it more profitable than the other crops.
Farmers of the district have urged the authority concerned to arrange more training programmes on onion cultivation.
