A 26-year-old man was shot to death and five others injured in a clash over felling of trees at a graveyard in Barpara union parishad of Sadar upazila under Comilla on Saturday night.

The deceased was identified as Russel, 26, son of late Sadek Miah of the area.

Locals said there had been a longstanding dispute between two groups of villagers over felling of some trees at the graveyard for some repair works.

As a sequel to the dispute, about 35-40 people, led by Barpara union parishad member Saju, launched an attack on their rivals in front of Mainamati Medical College Hospital in the union parishad around 7:30 am.

The attackers hacked and fired gunshot at their rivals, leaving several people injured.

Critically injured, six people including Russel were rushed to Mainamati Medical College Hospital. 

Later, as the condition of Russell deteriorated, he was shifted to Comilla Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries around 8:15pm.

Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model Police Station Abdur Rob confirmed this and said the situation of the area is now under control.
