Sidewalk traders doing brisk business in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, June 29: Seasonal traders are doing brisk business in the district ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr through setting up makeshift shops on the footpaths of the towns with the hope of earning profit to celebrate the Eid festival in a befitting manner.
According to sources, at least 1000 educated and half educated unemployed youths have set up garments, shoe, panjabi, cosmetic and cap shops on temporary basis on the pavements of the district and upazila towns during Ramadan.
The customers particularly the low and fixed income group are crowding the shops as the shopkeepers are selling their items at reasonable rates compared to stable shops in the markets.
Abdul Quddus who came to a makeshift shop to buy shoes for his daughter said the prices of all commodities are cheaper than the shops of the sophisticated markets of the town.
Another customer Saddam Hosain said the prices of the commodities would be cheaper one day before Eid ul Fitr as the shop owners would try to sell their items anyhow at nominal profit or buying rate.
Abul Kashem who set up a makeshift shop at the Poura Park of Gaibandha town said, "My close relatives have given me economical support for running the business in the Ramadan to earn extra profit to celebrate the forthcoming Eid festival in a joyous mood with my family members".
Afjal Bepari, another makeshifts shopowner said like the previous year he set up a shop on the pavement of the town in a bid to earn money by selling the commodities at reasonable rates to the poor and insolvent customers.
Besides, some college students have also set up makeshifts panjabi and fatua shops on the pavements of the towns to earn profit to meet the academic expenses in near future and to celebrate the Eid festival with much enthusiasm as well.
Makeshift owners Aziz, Sirajul and Mokbul also said many of them set up their temporary business establishments on the pavements with the hopes of earning money by which they would pay their loan received earlier for the marriage purposes of their daughters.
Though such makeshift shops have created hindrance for smooth movement of the pedestrians, the authorities concerned, particularly the poura authorities, are in a relaxed mood to oust the shops considering the greater interest of the poor and fixed income people.
