Five Sentenced to Life for 2010 Uganda Bombings

A Ugandan court has sentenced five men to life in prison for their roles in bombings that killed 76 people in July 2010.

Judge Alfonse Owiny-Dollo handed down the sentences Friday, a day after he found the men guilty on a range of charges including terrorism.  Two other accomplices received prison terms of 50 years.

Somali militant group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the bombings, which targeted football fans at a restaurant and a rugby club in Kampala who had gathered to watch the final of that year’s World Cup.

The militants said the attacks were a warning to Uganda to withdraw its troops from the African Union mission fighting al-Shabab in Somalia.

The judge named Issa Ahmed Luyima, a Ugandan national, as the mastermind of the attacks.
