BGMEA won\’t extend time for non-compliant units

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) at a meeting on Thursday turned down the plea for giving the non-compliant factories more time for introducing workers' biometric database, sources said.
Rather, the apparel sector trade-body decided that it will resume services to those factories only after their enrolment in the database system, they added.
On May 01, the organisation had put on hold providing the services to some of its members for their failure to register in the workers' biometric database service.
"The BGMEA board has agreed in favour of not giving any time afresh for registering in the workers' database system," BGMEA vice president Mahmud Hasan Khan said after the board meeting at its headquarters.
The meeting was called on following the request of a number of its member factories for further time extension.
Majority of the BGMEA member factories are yet to enrol for the service though the timeline for the purpose was extended three times since December to April.
BGMEA provides a wide range of services to its member units, including issuance of eight to ten certificates for receiving incentive, machine release, buyers' protocol and utilization declaration.
The database is important for successful implementation and use of a proposed fund for all the export-oriented sectors, as the fund would be collected at a rate of 0.03 per cent from each export receipt, the BGMEA leader noted.
Only 500 BGMEA members registered with the database during the last three years, while more 550 have enrolled for the service during last four days, he also said.
"All member factories have to come under the database system, if they want any service from the association," BGMEA senior vice president Faruque Hassan said.
