Wild Elephant Goes On Rampage in Eastern Indian Town

Villagers in India’s eastern West Bengal state say a wild elephant went on a rampage Wednesday, damaging around 100 structures and terrifying residents.

Witnesses told the Reuters news agency the elephant strayed into Ektiasal village in Siliguri district early in the morning and woke up villagers with its roaring.

The villagers came out to see the large elephant damaging houses and shops.

Attacks by elephants have been on the rise in eastern India. Wildlife experts cite destruction of habitat in India is one of the main reasons for the increase in encounters between wild animals and villagers in rural areas of India.

No injuries were reported. Forest department officials are trying to capture the elephant. [Read More]
