Projects undertaken for modernising Chittagong port: Minister

The government has undertaken various projects to modernize Chittagong port aimed at turning it into a busy port in the world.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan disclosed this, while replying to a question from treasury bench member M Abdul Latif in the Jatiya Sangsad Thursday.

“We have formulated a 25-30 year strategic master plan with technical support from Asian Development Bank (ADB) for Chittagong port,” he informed the House.

Shajahan said the government has already constructed backup facilities behind 4 and 5 berth of the Newmooring Container Terminal along with Chittagong Port Trade Facilitation Project (CTMS).

Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS) and Tugboat having capacity of 4,500 BHP were brought and set up respectively at the port, he added.

The government has collected Sea going Water Supply Vessel having capacity of 1,000 metric tonnes, Container and Cargo Handling Equipment for 29 no and three reconditioned container vessel and other projects, the minister said.

Besides, the government has undertaken several new projects to ensure other related facilities for the port, Shajahan Khan told the House, according to a news agency.
