Female ward commissioners: Some exercising power beyond mandate

Municipal and city ward commissioners elected from women’s reserved seats are being discriminated against while performing duties. They do not enjoy equal rights like their colleagues elected from general seats.
However, some of them are exercising powers beyond the mandate of the City Corporation. They are authenticating birth-death, inheritance, nationality or character certificates, though they do not have such authority.
The Local Government and Rural Development Ministry issued a circular regarding the jurisdiction of ward commissioners on September 23, 2002. [Read more]
