In a bid to reduce the food scarcity the Government has decided to import 50 thousand tons of rice from India at a cost of US$349.70 per ton.
It was decided yesterday at a meeting of the Adviser’s Commitee on Government Procurement with Finance and Planning Adviser Mirza Azizul Islam in the chair.
The meeting also approved import of 187,500 metric tons of urea fertiliser, appointment of a foreign consultant for Siddhirganj power plant and purchase of the aircraft for Biman, which is already in operation under a lease agreement
Asked why the government plans to import rice costing Tk 24 per Kg when it is now selling locally at Tk 22 per Kg, he said procurement from within would not help increase the supply of rice in the country. [Read more]
